Created in 1994 as an antidote to the violence and despair typical of the 20th century, this phantasmagorical show proposes a new vision of urbanity, overflowing with optimism and happiness. Tuning into Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration, it's hard to shake the feeling that the 24-minute sing-along was meant for somebody else. Just who remains a mystery throughout, but gambling viewers will come away betting on one of two equally obscure groups: either Will Vinton has cobbled together a cult following through some mysterious Claymation fan network, or—spooky though it may seem—somewhere out there exists a gang of California Raisins groupies. Considering that the Raisins have been dried up for years, the smart money's on Vinton, although the chorus of prune-like crooners are responsible for this tape's most enjoyable moment, that being a characteristically cool, soul-infused rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." The other segments, all seemingly unrelated save for the colorful Play-Doh-like appearance of their characters, come off as minor curiosities. A narrator obsessed with setting various bands of clay Christmas carolers straight on the lyrics to "Here We Come A-Wassailing" leads the way on a Christmas trail populated by singing camels and ice-skating penguins. None of it makes much sense, and for that reason the video is by and large forgettable. For budding clay artists, Vinton fans, and collectors of arcane Christmas specials, this one's a natural. —Tammy La Gorce |
